First Fridays Mardi Gras at Bixby Knolls

"Laissez les bons temps rouler! We’re letting the good times roll in the Knolls during our Mardi Gras First Fridays celebration

on February 6. The festivities will begin at Georgie’s Place (3850 Atlantic), 7:00pm, with our annual crowning and Mardi Gras

parade step off. This year’s king and queen are two local favorites, Councilmember Al Austin and his wife Daysha Austin!

After Mayor Garcia and 2016’s royalty, Brina and Jahaziel Romero, crowns the new king and queen the First Fridays Krewe

 will be led by the Dixie Six, spreading Mardi Gras cheer up and down Atlantic Avenue. Grab your beads, grab your boa, grab

Maha and Company.Our featured artist for our North Gallery is a real treat; Chris Wheeler, the man who built Toasty, our

band mascot, will be presenting his other robotic creature creations for the first time to the public! Meet this incredible

artist. Our featured artist for our south gallery will Bill Almas, known for his projection art with Phog Masheen and many

shows at the Cultural Alliance of Long Beach. Bill will will be presenting / selling prints of his famous projections and bold

colorful digital art on archival material that will last for years to come. So mark your calendar for Friday March 4th. We look

Holocaust Day of Remembrance (Yom HaShoah)

Yom Ha-Shoah exists as an annual memorial to over six million Jews who were murdered by the Nazis

during World War II. On May 4, Cypress College pays respect to this Holocaust Day of Remembrance

with a ceremony that promotes acceptance and inclusion, diversity and justice, no matter one’s race,

religion, color or creed.

AOC7's 4th Annual Literacy Fair

The fourth annual Literacy Fair by the neighborhood organization AOC7 will be held Saturday, the organization

announced. During the fair, children will be able to take home at least one book and enjoy live entertainment

including multicultural dancing, music and food.

The event will take place from 10:00AM to 1:00PM at

MacArthur Park, located at 1321 East Anaheim Street, on Saturday, May 21.

Healing Through Creativity A Creative Warrior's Journey

In this workshop, Long Beach and local healing support and creative communities will connect and build an

inspired community of creative support. Participants will complete transformational writing and creative art

prompts designed to help them let go of “sick,” challenged” or “impaired” identities they have strongly

identified with in the past but are ready to move beyond. Throughout the event, as participants connect and

share insights, Richard Harvey, the moderator, will abstract their feedback into a running Vocabulary of Hope

and Empowerment list that will in turn provide participants with powerful language to include in their prompt

responses. Numerous local artists, musicians and dancers will be performing throughout the event.

This event is partially sponsored by a Long Beach Arts Council Grant.

Norwalk Halloween Parade

Marching bands from throughout the south lands will perform alongside
ghouls and goblins in this year's Halloween Parade. The parade begins
at the intersection of Pioneer Boulevard and Mapledale Street and will
conclude at Hermosillo Park. Residents are encouraged to participate
by dressing up in their favorite Halloween costume and marching in the
parade. A costume contest will be conducted at the corner of Pioneer
Boulevard and Mapledale Street at 9:15am. Pre-registration is not 
required. Businesses, service organizations, and clubs are encouraged
to participate in this free program!

The Aquarium of the Pacific will be hosting a Baja Splash PARADE

on September 24th and you are all invited to come join! Procession will 

start from the back of the aquarium and travel out front. Be there

by 11am!

The Aquarium of the Pacific will be hosting a Baja Splash Cultural
Festival on September 25th and you are all invited to come join!
Maha and Company will be teaching how Hispanic dance moved
and evolved throughout history! All of this in front of one of the 
giant fish tanks. There are no special ticket to buy, but you do
need to pay for admission into the Aquarium.
